Town of LaSalle Operations in Response to Coronavirus - Update March 15, 2020

At this time, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) advises that the public health risk for the transmission of Coronavirus (COVID-19) remains low in Windsor and Essex County, and that there are no active cases of the virus in this area. The Chief Medical Officer of Ontario and the Chief Medical Officer of Windsor Essex have both recommended social distancing and avoidance of mass gatherings. The status of the virus is changing quickly worldwide, and the Public Health Agency of Canada has increased to a Level 3 travel advisory risk (travel health notices include a warning to avoid non-essential travel in order to protect the health of Canadian travelers and the Canadian public).

In an abundance of precaution, the Town of LaSalle is doing our part to help protect our residents to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In order to support the intended benefits of the school closures and to prevent the possible transmission of the virus in a community setting, the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex is closed effective Monday, March 16, until at least April 5. All Town of LaSalle March Break camps, programs, rentals and drop-in activities (swims and skates) at the Vollmer Complex are cancelled. In addition, the Riverdance Community Centre will be closed until at least April 5, and all rentals are cancelled. Any municipal programs and rentals scheduled at the local schools are also cancelled.

All registered day camp participants will be contacted and offered a refund and/or credit on account. Please be patient as this will take some time to reach all of the families and individuals who are currently registered. With the cancellation of all programs and rentals, the Vollmer Complex will be closed to all visitors until at least April 5.

The Town of LaSalle's Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is in the partial activation level which includes our Senior Management Group, and continue to consult with the WECHU, the County of Essex, local municipalities and first responder agencies to ensure we are prepared to respond to the challenges and concerns of a potential COVID-19 outbreak in Windsor-Essex.

The LaSalle Civic Centre remains open and at this time all municipal services will continue to be delivered with the exception of those offered at the Vollmer Centre as noted. Given the evolving nature of this situation residents and businesses may experience delays and are asked to follow the Town's media releases, website and social media channels for official information.  The Town would like to thank residents and businesses for their continued patience during this unprecedented event.

It is important to be vigilant as staff and as visitors to follow the precautions as outlined by the WECHU for everyone's safety. Cases of influenza are prevalent in the Windsor-Essex area. The following are used to protect yourself against respiratory viruses like influenza and coronavirus:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are ill (keep a distance of 2m).
  • Stay home when you are ill.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then immediately throw the tissue in the garbage and wash your hands. If you don't have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve or arm.
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched.
  • Residents should restrict all non-essential travel outside of Canada.
  • Travelers returning from travel outside of Canada should self-isolate for 14 days.
  • Families with children (17 and under) choosing to travel outside of Canada are required to self-isolate for 14 days upon return.
  • If symptomatic, residents should contact telehealth at 1-866-797-0000 or the WECHU at 519-258-2146 ext. 1420.
  • Immediate suspension of all large events and public gatherings of over 250 people.
  • Organizers with smaller gatherings are encouraged to reach out to the WECHU to discuss their event.
  • Practice social distancing as much as possible.

Most importantly, if you are not feeling well, please stay home. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. For up to date information, check the Windsor Essex County Health Unit's website at www.wechu.org.
