Province of Ontario Launches New Single-Stream Recycling Program

On January 1, 2026, Ontario’s Blue Box program fully transitioned to a new system where the financial and operational responsibility for recycling has shifted from municipalities to the producers of packaging, paper, and packaging-like products. This change means Ontario residents will be able to recycle more materials than ever before, with consistent rules across the province—no matter where they live.

Circular Materials is responsible for operating Ontario's new recycling system. Under the new system, GFL Environmental manages collection on behalf of Circular Materials. The January 2026 dates are missing from the 2025 Collection Calendar due to the transition to Circular Materials. The regular collection schedules remain unchanged:

·      Zone 2: Monday, January 12 and 26

·      Zone 1: Tuesday, January 13 and 27

Please note, red and blue bins will no longer be accepted. Use the recycling cart provided by the collection contractor. Circular Materials is working on locations in the Essex-Windsor area where residents will be able to drop off old carts and bins they no longer want.

For Essex-Windsor residents interested in a smaller recycling cart, a Recycling Cart Exchange Request Form is now available on the Circular Materials website. The request form will allow residents to exchange their current 360-litre recycling cart for a 240-litre cart.
