From Remembrance to Reflection: LaSalle Celebrates the Legacy of Canada's Veterans
The Town of LaSalle, in partnership with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594, invites residents to gather in remembrance and reflection at the annual LaSalle Remembrance Day Ceremony on Wednesday, November 11, at the LaSalle Cenotaph Park, located behind the LaSalle Civic Centre at 5950 Malden Road.
The ceremony will begin at 11:00 am and will honour the service and sacrifice of Canadian Veterans, those who gave their lives in service, and those who continue to serve today.
Anyone unable to attend in person can watch the ceremony live on the Town of LaSalle YouTube Channel, where the recording will remain available for future viewing.
Fighting in Flanders | Gas. Mud. Memory.
Fighting in Flanders | Gas. Mud. Memory., a travelling exhibition from the Canadian War Museum, is on display at the LaSalle Civic Centre, 5950 Malden Road, until Saturday, November 14.
The exhibition examines the Canadian experience in Belgium during the First World War through photographs, personal stories, and historical artwork. Featuring significant events such as the Second Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Passchendaele, it offers residents an opportunity to learn more about Canada's military history and the sacrifices made by those who served.
Our Local Veterans
Visit the Town of LaSalle website to learn about residents who were involved in previous wars and conflicts. Residents or families of Veterans of LaSalle, or the former Township of Sandwich West, are encouraged to submit photos and stories to be included on the Local Veterans page on the Town's website.
LaSalle Cenotaph Park
LaSalle Cenotaph Park, located behind the LaSalle Civic Centre, was constructed in 2014. The original granite Cenotaph now sits atop a new platform with a larger memorial design. The unique design remembers Canada's military personnel and is a great teaching tool for looking at some of Canada's military history.
The most unique feature of the Cenotaph is the slotted top in the steel plate of the monument. The slotted top allows for a beam of light that traces the sun's movement across the face of the map that is located behind the monument. The positioning of the memorial is calibrated to the sun so that the beam of light will be on central Europe at 11:00 am every November 11, commemorating Remembrance Day in perpetuity.
The map of the world behind the monument feels smooth for water and textured for land. Pins on the map mark the locations where Canada's Armed Forces have been at war or conflict and were engaged in peacekeeping missions. Located beside the map is a legend that explains Canada's military presence over the years.
Veterans Parking Spaces
The Town of LaSalle installed two parking spaces designated for Veterans at the LaSalle Civic Centre and at the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex in 2022. The parking spots are reserved for those who have served in our armed forces and honours our veterans. Any Veteran who is visiting one of the municipal buildings and has a Ministry of Transportation Veteran licence plate is welcome to park their vehicle in these spaces.
Veteran Pedestrian Crosswalk and Banners
A commemorative Veterans Crosswalk on Normandy Street at LaSalle Cenotaph Park and the annual Veterans Banner Program serve as visible reminders of the courage, service, and sacrifice of local Veterans.
Displayed along Malden Road and Front Road in 2026, the banners feature the name and photograph of a Veteran from LaSalle or the former Township of Sandwich West, helping preserve their legacy and connect residents with our community's military history. Together, these tributes encourage residents and visitors to pause, reflect, and honour those who served our country.
The Town of LaSalle is proud to partner with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 on these initiatives, which celebrate and recognize the contributions of local Veterans. For more information about the Veterans Banner Program, contact Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 at 519-969-0551.
Royal Canadian Legion
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 is located at 5030 Howard Avenue. They continue to focus on their objectives to support Veterans, youth, and first responders. From the last Friday in October to Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed. The red flower is the symbol of the Legion's Poppy Campaign, raising funds to support Veterans and their families in need. Poppy boxes can be found throughout the community accepting donations to the Legion's annual campaign.
