LaSalle Celebrates Local Artist Behind Iconic George the Giraffe Sculpture

The Town of LaSalle recognized local artist Gary Campeau with the unveiling of a plaque on Friday, June 5, 2026, for one of the community’s most recognizable landmarks, George the Giraffe, at the Vollmer Centre.

George was hand-carved by Campeau in 2009 from a fallen soft maple tree located in the yard of his home on Victory Drive in LaSalle. The 16-foot-tall sculpture, created from the storm-damaged tree, took an estimated 320 hours to transform into a distinctive work of art.

For more than 15 years, George the Giraffe has welcomed families, athletes, and visitors to the Vollmer Centre. The sculpture has appeared in countless photos, celebrations, and cherished memories, becoming a familiar and meaningful part of the experience for many who visit the facility.

The installation of a plaque ensures that future generations will not only recognize the sculpture but also learn about the artist and the story behind its creation.

The Town extends its appreciation to Gary Campeau for contributing his creativity and craftsmanship, and for leaving a legacy that continues to bring enjoyment to the community.
