Council Approves Municipality Wide Retail Holiday Exemption

The Town of LaSalle has approved a municipality‑wide retail holiday exemption under the Retail Business Holidays Act (RBHA). This decision, approved by Council, provides greater flexibility and consistency for local businesses operating on statutory holidays.

The RBHA is Provincial Legislation that requires most retail businesses to close on designated statutory holidays unless an exemption is granted. Municipalities may authorize exemptions either for individual businesses or for the entire municipality. Council has selected the municipality‑wide approach, allowing retail businesses in LaSalle to open on all statutory holidays except Christmas Day, which remains a required closure under the new by‑law. Operating a retail business on a holiday is optional, it is not a requirement. 

Council supported this approach as part of its ongoing commitment to fostering a vibrant, business‑friendly community. The exemption is intended to support local investment, enhance business retention, and contribute to economic activity throughout the year.
