Everyone has a part to play in emergencies. While we cannot prevent natural disasters, we can take steps to lessen their risk and minimize their impact. Emergency Preparedness Week serves as a chance for you to take proactive measures to safeguard yourself, your family, and your community during a crisis. This year's theme, "Be Prepared. Know Your Risks," aims to motivate Canadians to recognize the potential risks in their region and to understand the actions they can take to protect themselves and their loved ones.

By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies – anytime, anywhere. It is important to:

  • Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help you better prepare.

  • Make a plan – It will help you and your family know what to do.

  • Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.

"Our goal is to encourage families to discuss and take proactive steps towards emergency preparedness," stated Fire Chief Ed Thiessen. "Consider the potential risks in our community, establish an emergency contact list, and designate a family meeting spot in case you become separated. It's also important to gather identification, medications, and other essential resources to ensure your family can remain self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. Prepare now so that you are ready when an emergency occurs."
