Intersection Update: Stop Sign Changes Coming to Mayfair and Maple

map

In October of 2022, the Town of LaSalle conducted a Traffic Study of the Mayfair Avenue and Maple Avenue intersection. The data collected from this study was used to determine the volume of traffic at each leg of the intersection. Although the intersection does not warrant an all-way stop control, the data collected does show that Mayfair Avenue accounts for 65 percent of traffic in the intersection, during the peak 8-hour traffic volume, and would be considered the major road.

Based on these findings and Ontario Traffic Manual Book Number 5 standards, the Town has made the decision to reassign the right-of-way from Maple Avenue to Mayfair Avenue at this intersection.

The process used to reassign the right-of-way at a stop-controlled intersection includes three stages. The stages in this process, and the dates they will be implemented, are shown below.

Stage 1, July 3 to July 21: Stop signs are added to Maple Ave creating an all-way stop at the intersection. Signs are also added to provide warning of the new stop signs, and notification that the stop signs on Mayfair Avenue will be removed.

Stage 2, July 21 to August 5: Stop signs are removed from Mayfair Avenue and remain on Maple Avenue, making Mayfair Avenue the new through-street. Warning signs remain on Maple Avenue in advance of the intersection to notify drivers of the upcoming stop, and that traffic on Mayfair Avenue no longer stops.

Stage 3, August 5: Warning signs are removed from the approaches, leaving only the stop signs on Maple Avenue.
