LaSalle Council Considering Option to Enhance Vollmer Centre

Town of LaSalle administration is considering future expansion of the Vollmer Centre including a double gymnasium, dedicated fitness/aerobic room, expanded fitness area and lengthened indoor walking track, senior centre, as well as staff office space.
The Vollmer Centre opened in 2008 offering programming and rental space and now sees about one million visits a year. Many children and adult programs are operating at full capacity; and popular offerings like youth day camps fill up within hours of registration opening, leaving families on waitlists. In addition, fitness classes have outgrown dedicated rooms and are being held in hallways or the lobby.
The expansion will allow for enhanced programming and the introduction of new activities. Expanding the facility capacity is critical to sustain and grow community sport and recreation as LaSalle’s population grows. The need for expansion is estimated within the next two to four years as confirmed through the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan.
“High-level conceptual expansion plans are being shared with the public and will be refined following public consultation. By working through these steps, the Town will be better positioned to apply for provincial grant funding with a project that is closer to shovel-ready,” said Peter Marra, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer.
The consultation and detail design will take about one year to complete at an estimated cost of $250,000 (consultation, update drawings, architectural fees, engineering design, geo-technical reports, etc.) which will be funded through the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Reserve. It is anticipated that administration will present a follow-up report, detailed design, updated construction estimates, and a financial plan to Council in 2027 to consider the future direction. The capital and operating cost of the Vollmer expansion will also be outlined in a future council report.
