Your New Recycling Cart Is Here: Get Ready for Single-Stream Recycling in January
Residents of LaSalle and the Windsor Essex County region are receiving new 95-gallon recycle carts.
In June 2021, the province released the Blue Box Regulation shifting the financial and operational responsibility of recycling from municipalities to the organizations that produce packaging, paper and packaging-like products. Ontario residents will be able to recycle more materials than ever before and recycle the same materials no matter where they live in Ontario.
Circular Materials will be fully responsible for operating Ontario's new recycling system for packaging and paper products. Under the new system, GFL Environmental will handle collection on behalf of Circular Materials. The Town will share the recycling schedule once it becomes available.
For questions or more information, please contact GFL at 1-844-415-4351 (Phones may be busy. Residents may have to try calling more than once to reach a customer service representative.) or email WErecycling@gflenv.com.
Single-Stream Recycling
Starting in January 2026, recycling will be easier with a new single-stream recycling cart system in Essex-Windsor. This means you will be able to combine all recyclables into your new recycling cart rather than separating them into different boxes. Some things to remember:
-
Sort materials: Ensure recyclables are separated from garbage and organic materials.
-
Bundle cardboard: Flatten any cardboard before placing it in the cart.
-
Ensure materials are clean, dry and loose: This helps ensure materials are ready for recycling.
With new tools and technology, residents can put their recyclables all in one bin, and it will be separated when it is delivered to the recycling plant. These carts simplify recycling, reduce litter, and provide increased storage capacity.
About the New Recycling Carts
-
Store your carts until January when the new program begins.
-
Recycling carts have RFID identification and tracking systems, so each cart is assigned to a house to facilitate automated collection and tracking. As of January, residents will be required to use the recycling cart that is provided by GFL. Other carts/boxes will not be accepted
-
While GFL stated that they may consider collecting red/blue recycling boxes, it is still to be determined whether they will retrieve old/unwanted carts from residents at the time of new cart delivery. More information will be shared at a later date.
-
GFL is asking residents who are unsure about the size of the bin to try it for the first few recycle collections. Households that periodically generate more material than the 95-gallon cart can store their excess material until the next collection. Those who regularly exceed the 95-gallon cart capacity may contact GFL for an assessment to determine eligibility for a second cart.
Any accessibility concerns and/or special accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please contact GFL at 1-844-415-4351 or email WErecycling@gflenv.com.
More information will be shared before the new program starts in January. Please store your carts until January. By recycling, you make a difference. Your recyclables, once collected, sorted and processed, can be used again, coming back into your home as another product or packaging. By recycling, you help protect our environment and conserve our planet’s natural resources.
