The Town of LaSalle is nearing the final stages of design and beginning tender preparation for the Malden Road Phase 1 Rehabilitation project. At the Regular Meeting of Council on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Council received administration's report and authorized administration to tender Phase 1. The tender process will take place in late 2025 with a contract to be selected in early 2026.

Phase 1 includes Malden Road from Normandy Street to Reaume Road, and includes several major infrastructure upgrades including:

  • Road widening from two lanes to three lanes
  • 1 new traffic signal at Reaume Road
  • A new large-diameter storm sewer along the full length of the project
  • Widening of the Cahill Bridge
  • Watermain improvements in select areas
  • New sidewalks and curbs
  • New multi-use trails and cycle tracks, and
  • 2 new pedestrian crossings (on Malden Road, at the existing LaSalle Trail along the Cahill Drain (south of Shoppers), and near Stuart Boulevard.

The project will include a full closure with possible staging as follows:

  • Stage 1: Cahill Bridge (south of Shoppers Drug Mart) to Stuart Boulevard (estimated closure duration from June 2026 to December 2026)
  • Stage 2: Stuart Boulevard to Reaume Road (estimated closure duration from March 2027 to August 2027)

The full closure will reduce the project cost by approximately $725,000 and shorten the project timeline by eight weeks. Most importantly it will increase worker safety. The project will not begin until the Front Road Storm Sewer Reconstruction project road work is completed. Local homeowners and businesses will continue to have access through signage and detour routes. Local businesses will remain open.

“Malden Road is a key corridor in our town, and although the construction period will be extremely inconvenient for everyone, these upgrades will help us meet the needs of our community while improving safety for everyone.” said Mayor Crystal Meloche. “We are investing in infrastructure that will serve LaSalle residents for generations to come”.

The Malden Road Phase 1 project is part of a larger plan to improve the flow of traffic along this main corridor in LaSalle. Preliminary work includes the 2009 and 2019 Malden Road Environmental Assessments (EA’s) to study traffic patterns, safety concerns, and how the changes might affect the area. Residents were invited along the EA process to share their feedback. For full details visit the Malden Road Transportation, Public Safety and Urban Design Improvements page on PlaceSpeak.

Updates on this and other construction projects in the Town of LaSalle are shared on the Public Works Project web page.
