The Town held a drop-in session on Thursday, October 23, 2025, to share more about the study and hear feedback from the community. The feedback helps us understand what issues matter most to our community.
Short Term Rentals in LaSalle
The Town of LaSalle, with help from WSP Canada, is doing a study to look at ways to manage Short-Term Rentals (STRs) in the community. This could lead to changes in the Town’s Official Plan, Zoning By-law, and additional municipal by-laws.
The study will include in-depth research and public engagement, followed by the development of several options for consideration. Final recommendations will be made to Town Council.
What is a Short-Term Rental?
A Short-Term Rental (STR) is when someone rents out all or part of their home to guests for a short time — not as a permanent place to live. STRs can include places listed on websites like Airbnb or Vrbo, small inns, or bed and breakfasts.
Many other municipalities in Ontario have regulated short term rentals (STRs), including the Town of The Blue Mountains and Town of Fort Erie, as well as nearby to LaSalle in the Town of Essex and Town of Amherstburg and the City of Windsor.
Some options used in other places include:
- Permit STRs only in certain areas (e.g., areas with existing cottage rental industries and low permanent populations).
- Permit STRs only in certain contexts (e.g., only in neighbourhoods or in commercial/mixed-use areas).
- Permit STRs only as accessory uses (e.g., must be the owner/operator’s permanent residence).
Most municipalities are requiring licenses to operate STRs, which may have conditions attached for insurance, advertising, parking, noise, and nuisance, and require a licensing fee.
